October is my favourite month and each year I am eagerly waiting for the first snowfall that usually happens in October. Well, at least in the mountains. My expectations were especially high this year, since I just got a brand new lens for my Nikon D7000. AF-S NIKKOR 14–24mm f/2.8G ED is an optical masterpiece and it excells in landscape photography. So I was eager to try it out in my favourite conditions (a clear day after heavy snowfall).
Yesterday we finally received a larger portion of snow in the mountains. I woke up with a smile on my face as I saw the sunrays penetrating through my bedroom window. The day to shoot a Sunset in the snowy Julian Alps mountain range has finally arrived.
In the afternoon I drove to Vršič mountain pass, which is surrounded with amazing views of the high Alpine peaks.
But more importantly, it is a starting point to some of the most picturesque panoramic views in Slovenian Alps. Final destination of my trip was Slemenova špica. It is one of the lowest peaks in the area and as such offers striking views of majestic peaks in vicinity (Mojstrovka, Jalovec,…). The most famous postcard of Julian Alps is a photograph of Jalovec from Slemenova špica.
I was rewarded with amazing scenery right after I started my ascend from Vršič.
A photograph can tell more than a thousand words, but in reality the landscape was even more stunning.
Sun was already very low when I arrived to the final destination of my photoshooting trip. You have to wait until the very last moments of sunset to catch the beautiful red color of the highest peaks.
One last look at Jalovec offered an incredible sight with glowing clouds just above the mountain.
While descending, I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be just perfect to make the same trip at sunrise and make a collage of photos of the same locations at different lighting.
