Daffodils above Jesenice town with Milky way

One of the most known facts about my hometown Jesenice is, that in May the northern slopes above the town get covered in a white blanket of daffodils (Narcissus poeticus). It’s really an extraordinary sight to see meadows turn completely white. Each year many tourists and photographers visit the villages above Jesenice (like Plavški rovt, Jeseniški rovt and Planina pod Golico) to see and photograph this great natural event.

I wanted to make something a bit different this year so I decided to do some night shots and name the gallery “Between the daffodils and stars”. I wasn’t sure if the Milky way would be visible because of a lot of light pollution from Jesenice town. But fortunately it’s perfectly visible on a completely dark night and I was even able to make a panorama and photograph the complete arc of the Milky way. I am pretty happy about how it turned up in the end with a lot of contrast and color in the lower part (the core).

One of my favorite moments is when the night slowly starts transforming into day.

Sun rises behind the big mountains in the east so it doesn’t start shining on the meadows until 7:30 and the light is already very strong by then.

My second favorite image of the trip (behind the Milky way) is this compression shot at 120mm. I had to use focus stacking in this case to bring both the foreground and the background in focus. The daffodils were about 50 meters away from the camera and the church and forest were much further away (about 1 kilometer). I really love how the light is present in the upper and lower part, with dark shadows in between.

Daffodils are really blooming everywhere at this time of year, so it’s well worth visiting for a few yours for a relaxing hike.
